Chapter 3 Ethereal World

Chapter 3 Ethereal World
The warmth of the luminous sun shines upon him, Davis lies relaxed on the lush green fields. He smiles as a kind lady, with brown hair and loving blue eyes greets him, his mother. Davis is back home with his mother, who died 7 years ago.

“ Mother?”
“ Davis...”
“ Where am I? Why are you here?”
“ There is a lot we don't know, Davis.” she said in a gentle voice.
“ I don't get it. I was just stabbed in the chest. Am I dead?”
“ You aren't dead Davis. You are in your Ethereal World.”
“ Ethereal..... World?”
“ Your ideal paradise.”
“ Back with my mother...”

~

On the other side, Cecilia and Faustus are looking over Davis.
“ He should be in his Ethereal World.” said Cecilia.
“ Ethereal World?” Faustus asked in curiosity.
“ Unlike you and I, Davis isn't born with Hexis. He must pass a trial and earn his Hexis.”
“ A trial.... He'll be okay then?”
“ Those flames are mere figments of our imagination, an illusion.”
“ I see. Thank goodness.”
“ However, I cannot guarantee he'll make it back.” Cecilia's voice turned cold. “ If he doesn't pass this trial, his mind will be forever trapped in his Ethereal World, in a limbo-like state for all of eternity.”

~

“ It was 10 years ago, on that fateful day, my birthday. My mother was in a car accident on her way home. The doctors tried everything to save her, but to no avail. She still died.”
“ That is what you remember,” the manifestation that took the form of his mother spoke to him. “ It is not what truly happened.”
“ You're not mother, are you?”
“ I am but an envoy of your Ethereal World, depicted in the form of what you hold dearest to you.”
“ I don't remember what happened.”
“ You don't remember the truth.”
“ I remember a false memory where my mother died in a car crash. But that's not it, is it?”
“ Far from it...... Do you want to remember?”
Davis looks up to the clear blue skies, the soft clouds floating above. “ Yes, I do.”

~

10 years ago, this day, my birthday, my mother died. What I remember was a fake memory, that she died in a car crash, but the truth was much darker. I was only 7 years old, I hardly anyone to talk to. The only person I could find comfort in was my own mother. She was a kind and gentle mother. She gave me reassurance in my darkest hours, praise in my triumphs. I had just come back from a harsh day at school. It was typical. Teachers were reprimanding me for my behavior and none of the other kids wouldn't talk to me.
“ I'm home, mom.”
“ Welcome home, dear. How was your day?”
“ Lonely, as always.”
“ Now do try to make some friends.”
“ They all won't talk to me. It makes me sad” I began tearing up, as always. It's times like these that my mother would comfort me. She gave me warm hug, holding me in her arms.
“ It's okay. You don't need to make 1000 friends. Just make a few friends that you'll cherish 1000 times more.”
“ Thanks, Mom.” I said as I wiped my tears away.
I went up to my room. I was reading, as I always was back then. It was my birthday, but it was never anything special to me. My mother would pester me every year about it, to celebrate and make a memory of my birthday. I couldn't care less. My father was always away from home, on important business trips. So my mother and I were, most of the time, the only ones at home. I felt bored and lonely. I wanted to make friends.
I glanced outside the window, to see a group of friends playing in the fields. I envied them so.
“ Why don't you go out and play with them.” I turned around to see my mother standing at the door. “ Go on. Go make some friends.”
And so I did.
A little while later, I came home to tell my mother about all the friends I had made. As I opened the door, I broke down in horror. A demonic creature was standing over my mother. It was lanky in figure, with gray skin clad in black feathers. The creature had blade like arms ending in feminine hands with long, sharp fingernails. It had a single torn, feathery wing and white bandages covering its eyes. Its coal-black lips and rows of teeth smiled in delight as it leaned in closer to my mother. My mother signaled me to run, but I was frozen in place, too frightened to even twitch. The creature leaned in even closer. Its mouth gaped wide open and in an instant....... It bit my mothers head off. I screamed in terror and sorrow as in continued devouring her. Her blood staining the floors as the creature tore her apart and indulged in its meal. Then, it vanished into a flutter of black feathers.
“ That was all I remember. The truth that was sealed away from me.”
“ Yes. Now you must choose. To return to your grim reality or to remain in your perfect world, where you can be with your beloved mother? Choose wisely....”

~

Cecilia and Faustus wait patiently as they oversee the ritual.
“ He hasn't failed has he?”
“ Not yet, the flames remain. He still has a chance”
“ Let's just hope he makes it through.”
“ Ah, Demon Slayers performing a Hexis Ingenium Ritual, at the break of midnight.” A tall, lean man wearing glasses, with pointed ears and neat scarlet hair, enters through the window. He was dressed in a butler's uniform, cast in dark black fabric.“ My young mistress, Lady Libitina, would be very joyous to know of my find.”
Cecilia drew her blade.
“ Who are you?” Cecilia asked angrily.
“ Caedes, humble servant of Lady Libitina,” the man replied.
“ Crap, this isn't a homunculus. He's a real demon.” Faustus said in panic.
“ Faustus, stay here and guard Davis.” Cecilia forged a spear in her hand. “ I'll deal with him.”
“ A Genesis-class Hexis of Steel? This will be interesting.” Caedes cackled as he readied for battle. “ Come at me, girl!”
Cecilia threw the first punch. She held her spear firm and lodged it at the demon. Caedes dodged the projectile and returned the attack with a swift punch. Cecilia evaded his blow and proceeded to stab him with her sword, throwing him out from the window. Cecilia didn't want to risk Davis' safety and decided to take the battle elsewhere.
“ The power to forge steel weapons out of mere nothingness. Cecilia Phantomwing, holder of the Genesis Hexis of Steel.” Faustus whispered to himself. “ I'm sure she can win.”
Cecilia overlooked the felled demon from the window as he gets up.
“ Let's take this battle elsewhere, Caedes. I wouldn't want to damage academy property.”
“ Fair enough.” Caedes said as he smirked in delight. “ Let's take this to the garden.”
Caedes took off with blinding speed. Cecilia followed in pursuit.
A fearsome battle was to begin. A battle between a demon and a demon slayer.

Chapter 2: Hexis Of Flames

Chapter 2: Hexis Of Flames
In the solitude of an empty room, two people converse on heavy terms.
“ Davis Ardens, you say?” a girl's voice is heard as she speaks to her male acquaintance.
“ Yes, I believe that he would be a valuable asset to us”
“ Though you know the risk it brings him”
“ I am fully aware, Cecilia”
A short pause of silence fills the room.
“ The homunculi are getting out of hand, I slain one last night. Barely saving its victim. Davis Ardens.”
“ Davis was attacked by a homunculus?” the man asked in shock.
“ A weak one, probably the work of a lower-class demon.”
“ Algol?”
“ No, Algol is far too weak. He is incapable of creating homunculi. It must have been another demon.”
The man moans in pain as a bright blue mark on his neck glows.
“ Its getting worse, Cecilia” he mumbles weakly as he collapses on his knees, grasping his neck in pain.
“ The mark Algol placed on you, it isn't weakening, despite our efforts.”
“ We'll need help. We can't find Algol on our own.”
The woman glares at him coldly.
“ You must get Davis Ardens to join us. You understand, don't you? Faustus”

~
Depraved of sleep and extremely tired, Davis sits idly at his desk, yawning every now and then. He had arrived early and was not so optimistic about it.
“ Man.... why did I have to wake up so early.”
“ Because you didn't want to get expelled.” A friendly voice greets him as he looks over and sees Faustus standing in front of him.
“ Oh. Hey, Faustus. How you've been?” he spoke in a weak, uninterested voice.
“ Actually, there's something I need to talk to you about.” his tone shifted. It was serious. This caught Davis' attention, he knew it was something important.
“ Sure, what do you want to talk about.”
“ Let's talk about this somewhere else, with less people around”

~

They continued their conversation on the rooftop of the academy.
“ What is it? Faustus.”
“ July 13th
“ Hmm?”
“ Come to the academy on July 13th at midnight of July 12th
“ What's this about, Faustus?”
“ I can't give you all the details yet. But please, Davis. As a friend, please come.” Faustus sounded desperate.
“ Well, if you insist.”
Faustus grabs his hand in haste.
“ Please, Davis. I need you to promise you'll come.”
Davis had never seen him like this before. He didn't have his usual optimistic, friendly demeanor. His friend was shaken, in complete fear.
“ Alright, I promise.”

~

The moon recedes into a pitch black eclipse, as the clock strikes twelve on 12th July or rather 13th July. Faustus awaits his friends arrival at the academy gates. Davis has indeed kept his word, he arrives.
“ I'm here, Faustus. So, why did you bring me out here at this hour?”
Faustus gulps as he tells his friend to follow him. He walks up to the gate and pulls it aside. Davis was baffled, he could have sworn it was locked. Could security have forgotten to lock up?
He takes him to the 3rd year students' building, a restricted area for 2nd year students like them. Were they trespassing? Well, entering the school after hours was bad enough anyway.
They make their way down the halls, an eerie atmosphere surrounds them. Their footsteps echoing in the silence. They come to an abrupt stop at Class 3-S.
“ Here we are. She'll explain the rest.”
“ She?” Davis was confused. Faustus signaled him to go inside. He hesitated, but with his trust in his friend, he stepped forward. The room was empty, except for a lone girl. Davis stood still in shock, it was the girl from that night.
“ Hello, Davis Ardens.”

~

She was his upperclassmen. A student of Class 3-A, the leading class. Not only that, she was the top student of her year. Cecilia Phantomwing. She was of average height with long hair reaching her hips, with her bangs tied in red ribbons.
“ I supposed you're wondering why I've called you here.”
“ There are a lot of question on my mind actually.”
“ Naturally. Well, I guess I've got some explaining to do.”
“ Some?”
“ That thing you saw the other night was a homunculus.”
“ Homunculus?”
“ Unnatural beings created by demons.”
“ Demons? Unnatural beings.” There was no doubt. Davis thought this girl was completely nuts.
“ I don't blame you if you don't believe me. Faustus didn't at first either?”
“ Faustus? What's he got to do with this?”
“ He's my apprentice.” Davis sat down, this was a lot to take in at once.
“ I don't understand at all, just what the hell is going on?”
“ We, humans, live in the presence of demons. These demons leak out from the other world.” She continued on. “ there are those who seek peace and co-existence with humans. And there are those who seek to destroy us.”
“ I think I get the gist of it.” Davis was struggling to grasp the reality of this situation.
“ Yes. And to protect ourselves against these demons. We are granted the Hexis.”
“ Hexis?”
“ Most are born with it. Hexis abilities come in many forms, telekinesis, enhanced strength, rapid healing. The list goes on.”
“ Kinda like supernatural abilities?”
“ In a sense. Hexis are classed into four categories. Arbiter, Genesis, Aberrant and Ultimus. The Genesis Hexis is known as the Creation Hexis, granting the user the ability to create. The Arbiter Hexis is known as the Manipulation Hexis, giving the user control, the power to manipulate objects. The Aberrant Hexis are special ones that do not class under the previous two groups, granting strange abilities like transformation or physical oddities. And lastly, The Ultimus Hexis. The rarest Hexis, the ability to give the user the gift of creation and control, and also physical immunity to its Hexis ability. However, not every human is capable of controlling the power of a Hexis ability. If their mind and body cannot accept the Hexis, it will destroy them.”
“ So why call me out here?”
“ Hexis can be unlocked through a ritual. A ritual that can only be performed on this day, 13th July, the Dawn of Slayers. Once you unlock your Hexis, you'll be one of us, a Demon Slayer.”
“ Wait a second here. I did not sign up for this. I'm out of here.” Davis gets up and gets ready to leave. As he reaches the door, he recalls Faustus' desperation. There must be a reason why Faustus needed him here. Though reluctantly, Davis decides to stay.
“ Alright, I'll do it.”

~

He upon an what seemed like an alchemy circle drawn in chalk.
“ This might hurt a little.” Cecilia said as a long broad-sword slowly formed in her hand. She stepped slowly towards him. Faustus was feeling uneasy. Cecilia then thrust her blade through his chest. Davis cried out in pain as the sword pierced his skin and penetrated through his body. His spilled blood staining the drawn circle. Faustus could hardly look, it was painful for him to see his friend in such pain.
The alchemy circle begins to glow a bright orange.
“ It is done.” Cecilia utters as she withdraws her sword from his body. “ Now, we wait and see.”
“ Davis, be strong.” Faustus was concerned, but he believed that Davis would be able to control the Hexis. In a split moment, a rage of flames engulf Davis in a fiery inferno.
“ DAVIS!” Faustus reached out, trying to help his friend, but was halted by Cecilia.
“ Patience, Faustus. We yet not know if he will pass this trial.”

~

Davis....
Davis....
Davis...
A faint voice calls out to him.
“ Mo-mother? Where am I?” Davis awakens to find himself in a peaceful meadow. The cool summer breeze blowing as he relaxes on the soft grass.
“ I'm home.”

Chapter 1: Of Blood and Death

Chapter 1: Of Blood and Death

A chilling breeze blows through the night sky as the aroma of ash and blood tint the air. Two shadowy figures perched on the rooftops overlooking the city below as it glistens in the moonlight. The seemingly utopian society known as 'Uvium' . Though the peace and prosperity of the municipal community was only a facade. The sound of despair echoes though the city as one of the figures emerge from the shroud of darkness, it was a petite girl whose age seems no more than 10.
“ Caedes ”, she called out as a large middle-aged man stepped forward.
“ Yes, my lady. How may I be of service to you? ” the man replied.
“ That day is almost upon us, Caedes ”
“ Hmm? ”
“ July 13th, the Dawn of Slayers ”

Ring... Ring... Ring...
It is a beautiful new day, a young man is still dozing away at home as the school rings its first bell. Davis Ardens is a student of Arclight Academy, a prestigious school for gifted children. Despite his great intellect and superior academical ability, he's a lackadaisical, selfish slacker who desires only to please himself. He is of average stature, with bright blonde hair usually kept in a muddled fashion.
“ It's morning already ” he mumbles, as he is awoken from his slumber.
“ What time is it? ” he stares at the clock in disinterest.
“ I'm late.”
As he casually walks to the front gate of his school, he sighs as it had already been locked. Though this is no stranger of an occurrence to him anymore. He places both hands on the top of the gate and heaves himself over the fence. With great difficulty, he slips over to the other side without notice. At this point, he's severely belated, he had already missed two lessons.
He walks into his classroom nonchalantly. Dozens of eyes gaze upon him in shock as the teacher glares at him in enmity. At this point, Davis could care less about the droning lessons of daily curriculum as he had already mastered his subjects and some say he may even exceed a few teachers.
“ Davis Ardens, do you know how late you are? ” a shrill voice is heard, a woman in her late fifties inquires him in absolute fury.
“ A couple hours I think, two maybe.” Davis replies in a sarcastic fashion. His elderly educator was indeed very cross. As if her hair had sprung another gray or two.
“ This is unacceptable behavior, Mr.Ardens.”
“ Alright. Alright. It won't happen again. I promise”
“ This is the third time you've said that, Mr.Ardens. I'm sorry but if you are late again one more time, you will be expelled.” A moment of silence trilled through the room.
“ What a pain in the ass.” Davis thought to himself.

~

The gentle ring of the bell marks the end of another school day. Davis packs up and gets ready to head home. As he exits the classroom, he's greeted by a tall young man with dark green hair, a friend of his, Faustus Maledict.
“ Yo.”
“ Hey, Faustus.”
They had been friends since they were young, they were practically brothers. Faustus, unlike Davis, was more of an obedient person. He lived by the school's terms and agreed to the rules of the academy. Faustus was the order to Davis' chaos.
“ You got in more trouble again?”
“ I was a little late today.”
“ How late?”
“ 2 hours.”
“ That's a new record.”
Faustus was a very tolerant person, despite him and Davis being worlds apart, they could still get along.
“Oh, by the way, isn't your 17th birthday coming up?”
“ Yeah, July 13th. Why?”
“ That's next week isn't it? We should go celebrate.”
“ Guuuuyyyysssss~” a spirited feminine voice can be heard. Elizabeth Ravensdale, a close friend of theirs. She's a short girl with a slender figure, with fluffy pink hair.
“ Hey, Liz. You're just in time. We were just talking about Davis' birthday.”
“ Its no big deal really..”
“ Of course it's a big deal! Birthdays are an important part of living! It reminds us that on that same day many years ago, we came into this world through a dark hole otherwise known as th-”
“ Okay! That's enough, Liz.”
“ Not even Faustus can stand you sometimes.”
“ You guys are so mean.”
“ Its getting dark out. Davis, Liz, we should head back.”
The three of them were the closest of friends. Davis and Faustus had known each other for years and they've known Liz for as long as they were at Arclight.
They have a little chat as they make their way back home.
“ You'll be 17 soon, huh? Faustus, we should have our own little party to celebrate.” Liz said with great enthusiasm.“ He's one year closer to being a man.”
“ And what is that supposed to mean?” Davis wasn't amused. He had always found Liz's perverted jokes a little irritating.
“ Don't let it bother you, Liz is just fooling around that's all”
“ Sometimes it really pisses me off” Davis murmured.
“ Don't be like that! I'm just kidding! Faustus, you know what I mean, right?”
“ Well..... I guess you could tone it down a bit.”
“ Hmph” Liz pouts as she turns her head in annoyance. After a little chat, the three friends part ways and head home.
Walking in solitude, with only the glimmer of the moon to accompany him, Davis makes his way home. He treads slowly, his footsteps echoing in the silence of the darkness. Its nights like these, he can relax and just enjoy a leisurely stroll back home. The breezy wind of the night soothing him as he walks home, when a sudden ear-deafening explosion pierces his eardrums.
A humongous mutilated creature tumbles before him. A large mound of flesh and gore fused in an unnatural manner. What hardly could count as limbs were elongated and ended at large claw-like hands. With a single eye embedded inside a 'mouth' of sorts, with rows of inhumane, razor sharp teeth. The heavy breathing of the hulking beast resonates in Davis' ear. It spots him. Its single eye staring straight at him. In a second, the creature lunges at him at great speed. He froze in terror as this monstrosity came flying at him. His mind went blank, it was all over for him.... In his moment of fear, a gigantic blade flew by and cleaved the creature in half. Its pulsating organs splattering over him.
He fell back, utterly shocked. In the glistening moonlight, he sees his savior. He remained stunned as he gazed upon the black-haired girl with long beautiful hair flowing in the night breeze, wielding a large great-sword, who saved him.
“ Who are you?”
“ ….... my name is Da-Davis, Davis Ardens”
He was still shaking, he could hardly speak.
“ Forget everything you just saw.”
Her tone was assertive.
“ Wait, who are you?”
“ It doesn't concern you.”
She ran off, disappearing without a trace.
“ Who was that girl? What was that... THING? And why was she wearing an Arclight Academy uniform?”
